This Week: Posting from my WiP "The Girls From Alcyone II: Freelancer."

This week I'm changing focus back to Sigrid (the real heroine of TGfA). On a mission for her mistress, Hitomi Kimura, Sigrid prepares to infiltrate one of the many factory compounds on Bellatrix for a little bit of industrial espionage.

The last of the barriers loomed before her; a five meter-high wall of blackened, filthy permacrete.
Sigrid unslung the thin cord at her waist, attached the grappling claw to the hook on the end. With a quick spin, she tossed the claw upward, gently guiding its trajectory toward the beveled edge of the wall five meters above. Sensors embedded in the claw's teeth instantly analyzed the surface composition, creating and injecting a bonding agent strong enough to hold better than a metric ton; more than enough for Sigrid's fifty-four kilo frame.
In a blink, she was up and over, scaling the wall in three easy strides, lowering herself to drop silently down into the factory-complex beyond.
As imposing as the wall might be from the outside, here on the inside Sigrid was confronted with the true nature of factory's design. Everything from the thick, towering walls, topped with razor-wire; the suicide-netting slung beneath the armored windows of the tenements; it was all designed designed to keep the indentured workers in rather than keeping the riffraff out.
Riffraff, Sigrid thought, with a smile. I've been called worse.

  1. Is it wrong that I smile when Sigrid does? :-)
Love the snippet...can't wait for the release.

  2. You're not the only one that smiled, Mr. Hunter.

I can't believe you gave us her weight! Men aren't supposed to know these things!

Any idea on how soon the book will be released?

    1. I agonized over the weight. I think the reality is that she would probably weigh a lot more, considering that her bone-density and muscle mass would make her much heavier than a normal human - not to mention all the hardware she has embedded in her cranium.

  3. I'm a smilin' fool, boys.

Sigrid is smooth as buddah! Love her internal monologue. Bo wants to know where to get some of those grappling hooks.

    1. Hitomi will sell them to Bo, but she'll want to strip out the telemetry-controlled guidance systems (those are strictly top-secret, of course).

  4. Jax Marlin needs a grappling hook like that too. Great snippet...like TM, it had me smiling. More like grinning.

  5. That's a really cool claw. I need one of those (I love the science behind it). Great snippet.

    1. Thanks! It's always an adventure writing the sciency bits. People either love them or.. rake you across steaming hot beds of fiery coals. ;)

  6. Sounds like breaking the workers out might be one form of sabotage.

    1. Ooh! That may be a worthy distraction, should she need something like that.

  7. You always have such a way with combining details and action that make for such a fantastic read. It's like watching a good action movie, except I get to read it and not be distracted by terrible acting or graphics. :)

  8. Hmm. A place that's more a prison than a fortress...

I too love the claw. :) Very cool! And the riffraff line made me smile.

    Can't wait to read more.
